My rejection letter from Michigan
Here, verbatim, is the rejection email I just got from Michigan, who have apparently confused me with an 80s pop band:

Dear Mr. Mr.:
Thank you for applying for our position in the English Department here at Michigan. The Search Committee read your materials with much care and interest. Unfortunately, your particular expertise does not match our Department’s specific needs and we are unable to continue your candidacy.
I want to thank you for responding so fully to our requests for information and wish you the best with your research.
Sincerely,
David Porter
Associate Chair
Interim Chair, Department of English

I wonder if the four ex-members of Mr. Mister all got copies of my rejection letter, or if they each got different ones meant for other people.

I find the level of care and interest Michigan put into this rejection letter to be ironical. That’s right, I said it, ironical!
Glad I’m not the only one.
Yes. I thought of you when I got this, in fact.
Sorry you got a rejection, Mr. Mr. Mr.
Hopefully other universities will consider your materials (and their own) “with much [more] care and interest.”
That’s actually not bad for Michigan. Several years ago one of my friends applied there, and to this day he swears they sent the rejection letter sooner than they could have received the letter.
He was half-expecting the letter to say, “Dear Jeff, In case you thought of applying, please don’t.”
